Live @ Massey Hall - July 19th

Warren had an extra ticket for the Live concert at Massey Hall last night, so he offered it to me. I guess I was in the right place at the right time.

Massey Hall is a historical venue that hosted its first performance in 1894. Located in the heart of downtown Toronto, it has a capacity of approximately 2,750, so it allows for a pretty intimate setting. For you heritage buffs out there, Massey Hall is a designated building under the Ontario Heritage Act.

The opening act for the show was Canada's own Jeff Martin. Many of you will remember him as the former lead vocalist for The Tea Party. He performed six songs in a 50 minute set, including Tea Party favourite "The Messenger" as well as some of the solo material that he has been writing in his new home in Ireland. To be honest, I wasn't all that interested in the opening act, as we all wanted to see Live. While Jeff had his unique powerful voice, I think he inadvertedly allowed background instrumentals drown out his voice at times.

After a quick change over, Live took the stage. Their performance was really well done on all levels. Covering both new material from their latest album, and older material from previous albums, everyone definitely left satisfied. Live really knew how to perform to the crowd, it showed as they have been around for the last 15 years to honed their skills. Warren made a really good point during the performance, about how the band was around since we were in junior high school (ah, those St. Andrew's days).

Two slightly disappointing aspects of the night was the size of the audience and the fact that there was no Live merchandise table. Massey Hall was only about 70% full, as it seemed like not many people really knew about this concert. Perhaps with better promotion of the event, it would have sold out. Also, there was no Live merchandise table. Instead, all that was available was Jeff Martin-related stuff. Apparently, I've been told that this sometimes happens due to tax reasons when bands come to Canada.

I didn't know you went to the Live concert. I've loved Live since the sad Lightning Crashes times.
