Windows XP SP3 vs Media Center 2005 Extender Software Issues
Some of you that are still using Media Center 2005 (with Update Rollup 2) and Extenders for that platform may have run into issues with the Extender software after you have installed Windows XP Service Pack 3.
In particular, attempts to install the Extender software would fail or attempts to add new Extender devices to the host computer would fail.
When trying to install the Extender software on a system or when trying to add either a V1 Extender or Xbox 360 Extender device to your host machine with Service Pack 3 installed, you would get a message similar to this.
or
To get around this, follow these steps so that you can re-install the Extender software after Windows XP Service Pack 3 is installed.
- Go to Start, Run and type 'cmd'
- At the command prompt, type 'reg add "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\HotFix\KB895961" /v Installed /t REG_DWORD /d 1 /f' and press 'Enter' (Starts with reg and ends with /f, all in one line)
- Run the Extender setup again. To download the Extender setup files, follow this link: http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=73537
What does the above fix do? It basically adds a registry key so that the hotfix KB895961 (essentially, the Extender software) can be re-installed after Windows XP Service Pack 3 is installed. It seems that Windows XP Service Pack 3 interferes with configurations where the Extender software is already installed, and Extender software itself, without any registry modifications, would not install when Windows XP Service Pack 3 is installed.
Hope this helps people who have run into this issue.

command prompt said that command was successfull.. yet i still get the same error.
Thanks for figuring this out, it working now! Cheers
did the reg edit, said it was successfull, yet i get the same error (differnet person than the last anonymous) i have media center with rollout 2 and sp3 final.
Make sure u put a space in Windows NT
Thanks Jason that worked great. For those of you getting the syntax wrong. highlight everything between the ' and the ' which should be
reg add HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\HotFix\KB895961" /v Installed /t REG_DWORD /d 1 /f
click, start, run. Type "CMD" hit endter
left click the top right icon (its a little black screen with a c:\ in it), come down to EDIT, and select paste, then hit enter.
Done and done :-)

EDIT -- Fixed Typos
Here's my result...
"ERROR: Too Many Command-Line Paramters"
For those having problems, the last two posts missed an opening quote before the HKLM:
reg add "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\HotFix\KB895961" /v Installed /t REG_DWORD /d 1 /f
Well it worked to install the extender, but now my 360 freezes during startup into Windows Media Center... can't figure out why.
Thanks a lot man, worked great!
My 360 freezes during startup where it says contacting. Any word on a fix for this particular issue?
It appears to work at first, but the problem returns. It works better if you follow with a reboot. The main problem that most people are having is the Media Center Extender (Xbox 360) is freezing while at the contacting screen.
System restore is the only working solution.
Great tip, worked for me. thanks.
hey i did what u told me to but it still aint working :/ says the same thing x
Before I found this solution, I uninstalled rollup2 from the "add/remove" programs window. I thought the message was saying to uninstall that and then reinstall it. Now I am not able to reinstall rollup2. Went to "windows update" and it does not show up for me to download. Found a direct link to dl from and it starts to install and then says it can not continue installation. Can't figure this out. Anyone got suggestions? Thanks, Dave
I had that same problem as you, Dave. I had to uninstall SP3 and then Automatic Updates found rollup2. I still haven't got it all working but I just need to spend more time one it.
Thank you for the direction. your fix worked like a charm. This had me puzzled for the better part of two days!
Many Thanks! Why couldn't Xbox 360 support help with this??!
Thanks for the fix, works a treat and im glad there are people out there that know how to fix this stuff.....cos i'd be stuffed if they didn't exist!! :P
thank you, thank you, thank you...... at first when copying the line you said to copy into "cmd" i was still getting the same error.....noticed that when you copy from your blog that when highlighting the line, it sometimes highlights the end quotation mark....happened to me 3 times before i noticed. i made sure i only highlighted between the ' marks and now worked like a charm. thank you again for taking the time to help us fix our machines.....
THANKS SOOOOOOOOOOOO MUCH! I freagin reformatted my HD and reinstalled everything...took me 2 hrs and still didn't work until I saw this. Now it finally works perfect!
YOU RULE
Good job man. Much appreciated! You've helped out a lot of people... including me =)
Thanks man! That was really helpful.

This is for everybody that wants to use SP3 and not having a crashing Xbox 360, when using it as a media extender. After some research I've found a solution that might also work for you, check out it out here: http://blog.thinksharp.nl/2008/07/27/Xbox360FreezesAsMediaCenterExtenderSayingContacting.aspx
Thank you very much for this, it solved my problems...
Excellent work, Jason; clearly a lot of peopleexperienced this, and many of them have been helped by this.
What really needed now is for MS to host a KB artivle, with instructions on how to manually add the registry key.
(using the CLI interface to the registry didn't work for me, due to all the reasons listed previously regarding formatting charcters, etc. Doing the sameusing regedit, whilst a bit longer to rite out, is much mroe sure-fire, and you don'tend up with random "junk" entries in the registry by mistake!)
Many thanks again - life-saver...
Thank you so very much Jason. I appreciate your help/solution. After searching on google, I came across a link to your blog on another website. After I added that reg key entry, everything was ok again.Installed very easily after that. The frustration is finally over with.Thank you. :-)
Hello Jason,
My linksys extender stopped working after I installed SP3 on XP MCE 2005 w/ Update rollup 2 already installed.
I have tried the cmd line registry edit followed by uninstalling and reinstalling the extender software several times. During each installation the extender gives me a 8 char setup key (xxxx-xxxx) which I enter and the installation reports a successful setup and that the extender is ready to use. Unfortunately the extender doesn't think so and tells me that it cannot connect along with error code 00000002.
I have also tried installing KB895961 (is this the same as your cmd line fix?) and then tried reinstalling the extender sw with no success.
I also have .net framework 3.5 installed.
Can I uninstall SP3? Would that help?
thanks,
Fred
Thanks for this. Just got round to adding my Xbox back as an extender after the Red Rings, and got hit with the SP 3 problem. This worked a dream. Also sorted the Messenger problem out which was also bugging me. All round a good, if frustrating day at the office
You are the man!
Jason mate, you're a legend. I've had the SP3 problem and although I'm a software support technician for a large software company (not MS tho)have spent 5 hours tryin to fix this bloody problem but after reading your fix, had it up and running within 5 minutes.
Cheers buddy. =0)
Thank you very much, fixed my problem
Thank you! My problem is solved. I could not install extender software for my xbox360 and this fixed it! Only issue now is that it is a bit unstabil and slow on my 360 in the menus and very very slow at upstart on the 360. No problems on the PC.
QUESTION: Why does the extender 360 software propose 802.11A wireless network for better function??? I run a NetGear 802.11G router and can only choose B and G standard.
Thank you for this: reg add "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\HotFix\KB895961" /v Installed /t REG_DWORD /d 1 /f
Thanks very much for the fix. This would've driven me crazy trying to figure it out on my own. You, sir, are a lifesaver.
Many many thanks. Bloody microsoft should have tested this. :D
And no I wont move to Vista. :D
Cheers, many hours here spent installing and reinstalling .net 1.1 and 2.0.
This has done the trick.
Thank You!
Thanks alot!!
This damn bug made me re-instsall my XP MCE 2005 3 times.
Jason, you are indeed a legend.
Thats twice I have had a problem with downgrading to XP MCE SP3 from Vista and you have helped me swerve both curve balls.
Nce one!
;)

Thank you very much!

Thanks so much for this. I have been without digital tv for weeks after downgrading from Vista back to XP. As usual Microsoft support had no reference to this problem.
Thanks again champ !
Paul from Sydney.
ahh, I have a problem with it, I am running windows xp with sp3, I go onto run, CMD (all fine). I then type in your provided code, it says "reg" is not recognized as an internal or an external command, operable program or batch file
Any Suggestions What to do next?
(The batch file doesn't work either)
Thanks mate!
Thanks Mate sorted the problem out.
Thank you very much.
It's people like you that bring a smile to my face.
Cheers,
Mike
comand promt said successfull but still getting the same error. Any other options I can try?
I cut and pasted the code. Thank You
thanks worked for me
Excellent, without this help, well ...
I deleted the files for the media centre...my PC rebooted and I cannot access anything now except the F1, F8 screens and connot do anything from there...how can I access my system recovery?
Thanks Jason, your registry edit works great. But now,I am having a problem further along in the process of installing Media Center Extender. On the page with the checkbox for registration that says THE EXTENDER IS CONNECTED when I hit 'next' a small window pops up that says "MCXNET TW.exe Common Language Runtime Debugging Services". It then states a bunch of numbers that are different every time and gives me a choice to skip or debug. No matter what choice I make the result is the same; total freeze of the installation, and it will not complete. (maybe I can register outside of the extender install?)
I sent this same request for help to Xbox Live, so far no joy.
ehm... marry me?
you rock :)
been figuring out for 2 weeks now and even downed sevral versions of mce2005
all ofc. had sp3 installed :P
Thanx a bunch dude! I was about to re-install XP but this really saved my day
Legend!!
Thanks mate :-)
Worked just as advertised. Many thanks!
Thanks it worked for me.
Brilliant! I'll name my next child after you!
Worked when I finally got it right. Just can't get the x-box to play DVI's.
Cheers
Thank you very much for this - saved us from a night of banging our heads against the wall!
